Children’s Program Student Assistant

Position Title : OFF Campus Work-Study Student Assistant – Children’s Program 

*Students must have their own form of transportation* 

Students must be federal work study eligible* 

Organization : Skyline Literacy 

Location : Spotswood Elementary School, Harrisonburg, VA 

Supervisor : Children’s Program Coordinator (with oversight from Executive Director) 

Schedule : Monday & Thursday evenings, 5:45–8:15 PM (September–December; January–May) 

Organization Overview Founded in 1987, Skyline Literacy provides needs-based instruction for adults in Harrisonburg and Rockingham County in Literacy, English (ESOL), Digital Literacy, and Citizenship through trained volunteers. The Children’s Program supports families by providing a safe and engaging space for children while parents attend ESOL classes. Position Summary

The Work-Study Student Assistant supports the Children’s Program Coordinator in delivering a structured, safe, and engaging environment for children ages 4–12. This role is ideal for students interested in education, child development, nonprofit work, or community engagement. 

Key Responsibilities :

  • Assist with setup and cleanup of the program space each evening
  • Support volunteers in facilitating activities such as reading, crafts, and games 
  • Help supervise children and promote a safe, inclusive, and positive environment 
  • Assist with sign-in/sign-out procedures to ensure children are released safely
  • Help organize and distribute materials for activities 
  • Support smooth transitions between activities 
  • Communicate any concerns or incidents to the Coordinator 
  • Assist with light administrative tasks (attendance tracking, organizing forms) 
  • Help maintain cleanliness and organization of the program space

Preferred Qualifications :

  • Interest in education, child development, social work, or related fields
  • Experience working with children (preferred but not required)
  • Reliable, punctual, and able to work evening hours
  • Positive attitude and willingness to learn
  • Ability to follow directions and respond appropriately in a fast-paced setting
